UK Pharmacy Licensing & Migration Guide
The UK Pharmacy Licensing & Migration Guide focuses on foreign-trained pharmacists moving to the UK via the Pharmacy OET (English Proficiency Test). The UK attracts numerous overseas pharmacy specialists for study and work.
1. GPhC & PSNI: The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) regulates pharmacists in England, Scotland, and Wales, while the Pharmaceutical Society for Northern Ireland (PSNI) oversees Northern Ireland. The GPhC’s Overseas-Qualified Pharmacist Route is the pathway for foreign pharmacists.
2. Overseas-Qualified Pharmacist Route:
OSPAP: The Overseas Pharmacists' Assessment Programme (OSPAP) is a 9-12 month course at GPhC-accredited UK universities, preparing pharmacists for internships and practice. Applicants must secure a university slot before applying to GPhC. The OSPAP application fee is £687, and documents must be sent via courier.
Foundation Program: A 52-week internship in England, Wales, or Scotland.
GPhC Registration Assessment: Passing this assessment is mandatory.
3. OSPAP Eligibility: Applicants must submit a form detailing qualifications, work experience, fitness to practice, and English proficiency proof. Universities have currently paused admissions for 2023 and 2024 due to high demand.
4. English Proficiency:
Pharmacy OET: Requires a B grade in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Accepts scores older than two years with proof of maintained competency.
IELTS Academic: Requires a minimum band score of 7.0 in each section.
The process is costly and requires substantial planning and potential sponsorship.
