Understanding the OET Reading Sub-test
The OET Reading sub-test is divided into Parts A, B, and C, each requiring different reading skills. Part A, known as the expeditious reading task, involves reading quickly through four short texts to answer 20 questions in 15 minutes. The focus is on skimming and scanning for key information, especially for matching questions (1-7). For sentence completion and short answer questions, exact words or phrases from the texts must be used, with correct spelling.
Parts B and C are careful reading tasks. Part B tests the ability to understand the gist and identify details in six short texts, each with one question. These texts may include policy documents, guidelines, manuals, emails, or memos. Thorough reading and comprehension of details are essential here.
Part C is more challenging, assessing the ability to understand opinions and attitudes. This includes recognizing explicit statements and implied meanings, understanding lexical references, and differentiating between various opinions within the text. Slower, more in-depth reading is required compared to the faster pace in Part A and the surface-level reading in Part B.
Each part of the OET Reading sub-test presents unique challenges, but with adequate preparation and practice, achieving the desired score is attainable. For additional practice materials, click this link.
